Indexing valve conversion to electric valves

We replaced a mechanical timer and an unreliable indexing valve with electric valves and a Rain Bird digital Wi-Fi controller.

Project case study

01

Problem found

The indexing valve changed zones unpredictably. The watering sequence was unreliable: some zones were skipped and parts of the landscape received no water.

02

Diagnosis

We confirmed that the pump started, but the mechanical indexing valve did not advance consistently to send water to the correct zone. The problem was the sequential distribution method, not the programming of a digital controller.

03

Work performed

We removed the mechanical timer and eliminated the system’s dependence on the indexing valve. We converted the system to individual electric valves protected inside a green valve box, installed the zone wiring, and added a Rain Bird digital Wi-Fi controller. We also connected the controller to the pump-start relay, programmed the watering schedule, and tested each zone separately.

04

Components installed

Rain Bird digital Wi-Fi controller, electric valves, green valve box, pump-start relay, low-voltage wiring, and PVC connections.

05

Final result

Each zone is now activated directly by the controller without depending on an indexing valve. The zones water in the programmed order, every area receives water, and the homeowner can manage the system from her phone.
